Background

Many have been gathering at The Mission since October 2006 when Dr. John Perkins, founder of the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA), joined us to share about the biblical principles and philosophy of community renewal.

(Find out more about CCDA at: http://www.ccda.org.)  A forum to discuss Dr. Perkins' insights and exhortation was held a month later. Momentum became so strong that we continued to open our doors.

In 2006-07, on average, we had 100 in attendance per month (with over 400 who have attended at least once) as we heard from other guest speakers, spent time in prayer, built friendships and in many cases entered into new collaborative relationships. Those who attended represent a diverse group: pastors and members of area churches (both central city and suburban); business men and women; social service professionals; government employees; etc. This group mirrored the cultural and ethnic diversity of Greater Cleveland.

In the fall of 2007, we put together an advisory committee for our collaborative efforts, now called Collaborate for a Greater Cleveland. Our vision is to serve as a faith-based strategic center for driving positive change in the central city. This diverse forum coordinates action through partnering, collaborating and networking individuals and organizations to address critical community issues with maximum efficiency. Our blog is www.aGreaterCleveland.org.

In 2007-08 we hosted Mayor Frank Jackson (September 26) with well over 200 people in attendance. He shared thoughts about renewal in Cleveland, followed by a rich Q&A session. We also hosted Cleveland Schools CEO, Dr. Eugene Sanders (March 6) who spoke to a diverse audience of 160 representing schools, churches/ministries, social service agencies, and government agencies and interested citizens. We have held several prayer meetings in 2008.
